Take Care of Your Energy with Bach Flower and North American Flower Remedies!

Do you ever feel like you're worrying about other people so much that you're depleting your own energy? Are you too open to outside, even psychic influences? Need to learn to set appropriate limits and boundaries even while you remain able to care for other people in your life (like children, sick or disabled loved ones, etc.)? Flower essences can be really helpful! I use this one when my attention is too scattered or being drained. If you really need it, it can be surprisingly effective! Mama Love dropper bottle formula for Inner Strength and Protection is available in my Etsy shop now.

How Dr. Edward Bach's Development as a Medical Doctor Led to the Creation of the Bach Flower Remedies

Happy Birthday to Dr. Edward Bach, inventor of the Bach Flower Remedies!

Julian Barnard, who is quite the researcher in the field of flower essence therapy himself, has a set of videos about the Bach Flower Remedies on the Healing Herbs website. The first one gives a bit of the background behind how a respected medical doctor progressed from being a researcher in immunology to exploring homeopathy, the closest precursor to flower essence therapy. It's a very long video (31 minutes) by internet small attention span theater standards. But it is interesting if you're curious about how the body responds to flower essences and why. More conjecture in this video than proof, but it does give an idea of what the thinking might have been behind this innovative approach to health and well-being.

I use Bach flower remedies made by Healing Herbs and Julian Barnard in my Mama Love flower essence formulas.

Clearing Negativity for Spiritual Growth Using Flower Essence Remedies

This formula was  originally designed both as a scented spray to act like a smokeless smudge to clear negativity from one's self and from an environment in preparation for spiritual practice. (See links below.) But at the same time I decided to experiment with using the flower essences in water with brandy in a Bach Remedy-style dosage strength dropper bottle and found that I really liked how my attitude improved!

It was during the 2016 election season. I believed my candidate was cheated so I was angry all the time and felt like I ought to meditate because I was having a hard time reaching for a more spiritually aware point of view. But I just could not get myself to do it! (And I wasn't alone--you should have seen my email!) Using this formula helped ground me, and I seemed to lose my interest in focusing on the angry upsetting things I was seeing in my Facebook newsfeed or on the evening news. The more I used it, the more I found myself choosing to focus on positive things that I could do something about. It wasn't that I felt or feel powerless in terms of the political arena— in unity, at least, there is strength—but rather than continue to sing my "I been done wrong" song, I shifted my focus to how things could go right. And I started to explore how my pessimism was affecting the choices I habitually make in my own life. I found myself reaching, without conscious continual effort, in that direction. Things changed. Things are still changing. In some respects, you might say it initiated a turning point in my life. I made significantly different choices and where that will lead is looking interesting, surprising, and is still in progress.

One thing is true for sure: I've learned that I don't always know what's best for myself, never mind what is best for all concerned. As I said, surprising revelations have occurred. I'm finding myself more and more in a "show me the way," "demonstrate what is in my highest interest," "I allow myself to be blessed" attitude. It's sort of changing the whole game plan.

Abundant Prosperity Flower Essence Formula

I am FINALLY getting around to adding conventional flower essence formulas to my shops! Don't ask why but I didn't conceive of my business model as providing traditional Bach style flower remedies. All my formulas were originally combined with essential oils to make topical flower essence oils and sprays.

But I use my formulas often enough as conventional flower remedies! So today I start adding them to my shops. The first -- because it starts with the letter "A" -- is Mama Love for Abundant Prosperity. It contains North American flower essences, the flower power of Zinnia, California Peony, Iris, and Madia. It is for releasing stuck energy in the second and first chakras and cultivating feelings of joy, safety, prosperity, and abundance while promoting the creative inspiration and disciplined focus to go after your heart's desire. I like it because it helps you lighten up, relax and manifest from a place of comfort and positive expectation.

Mystic Natural Botanical Perfume

Visions and inspirations, spiritual sustenance and support. That is what comes to mind when I think of spiritual perfume. Did you know that all perfume was at one time thought of as a spiritual salve for the spirit? My Mystic perfume is created in this vein as well.

The scent of incense in the woods… Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Angelica, and Clary Sage with flower essences especially chosen to enhance the emotional profile (so you feel as good as you smell) in a skin-soothing base of pure organic jojoba oil. This very special offering is highly concentrated (about 17%) parfum strength.

Dance into the mystery! Feel guided by the Light. Let your dreams inspire you. Let your Spirit take flight. That’s the experience of the MYSTIC.

Natural Botanical Perfume Enhancers or Extenders

What is a "perfume enhancer" and why would I want one?

In the conventional perfume world an enhancer is typically a chemical or set of chemicals that boost the aroma of the other ingredients and make the scent last a lot longer. Phthalates, in particular, are used, like plastic wrap (almost literally), to trap aroma ingredients in the carrier used for the perfume and keep it from evaporating. Very effective but, when applied to skin, what you are doing is applying a plasticizer with believed endocrine disrupting effects to your body and nobody knows what it may be doing to you. The FDA has declined to take a strong stance on this, saying the evidence isn't strong enough. However, there has been significant concern about phthalate use in cosmetics as a potential factor in why young girls are reaching puberty at much earlier ages. Research does show that the chemicals can cause such effects in lab rats. So public outcry is forcing a certain amount of change.

In my 100% natural botanical perfumes, I never use chemical perfume enhancers of any sort. The botanical perfume experience is, therefore, quite different from the chemical soup most people douse themselves with (and expose other people to) on a daily basis. Botanical perfumes do not tend to announce themselves to any room you walk into. You can't use them to make an "entrance" as in the old-school version of glam fashion perfume characterized by Chanel or Dior.

Instead my natural perfumes hug your body. They actually are made to sink into your skin for emotionally uplifting or soothing effects (made from the highest quality essential oils used in aromatherapy). And later, they combine with your body chemistry to create a scent more or less unique to you. If you perspire on a warm day, you'll actually catch a whiff of the aroma long after the initial perfume scent has gone! But, that said, if you are used to chemically enhanced perfumes, natural botanicals may take time to adjust to as your less overwhelmed senses reset to become more aware of the natural world. Eventually, you may notice that conventional perfumes and perfumed-enhanced products (like laundry detergent) smell way too strong! And that's good because, honestly, that much sense-enhancement is probably not good for us. (Take a break from all scented products for a week or two every so often—it's quite the education!) When your senses readjust you'll probably never want to go back to commercial perfumes at all.

The downside? The scent of natural botanical perfumes won't last as long as you're used to and will need to be reapplied later in the day. (Of course, I find that to be an awesome treat!) Fortunately, there are some tricks to extend the scent longer. I use "fixative" essential oils in my perfumes whenever possible. (Oils that naturally evaporate less quickly than others and fix the other oils in place with them so they evaporate less quickly, too.) But sometimes that's not enough, especially in a light and breezy sweet floral or citrus-based scent.

So that's where the deliberate use of a "perfume primer," natural enhancer or  "perfume base" might come in. One thing that helps a natural perfume stick around longer is if it does not sink into the skin quite so fast. If you have very dry skin, like I do, you will find that using an unscented body oil or moisturizer first will keep it from absorbing so much perfume. You could also use a lightly scented body oil made to match or complement the perfume you use. Or you could use a scented or unscented salve or balm. I have a body oil to match every perfume I make and a number of perfume balms as well. (The balms smell particularly wonderful and, while much less concentrated than my full strength perfumes, can be used as a lighter perfume on their own!)

Multiple Exposure Photography

A classmate of mine suggested I show people the images I used for my final project in a photography class we took together. I started with multiple shots of a similar set of scenes: grass emerging in the Spring, some close-up, some including a fence. Then I combined them using various techniques in Photoshop. If you click on the photo it will take you to the same image available as a print on Society 6.

Incense and Oranges Natural Botanical Perfume -- The Scent of the Ashram

I think my new Incense and Oranges perfume is going to be a hit! (I sure like it!)

It started with the memory of drinking Earl Grey tea in front of a blazing fireplace at Christmas with friends. Then I added incense-like notes such as Frankincense and Myrrh (you know, Christmas!) but I wanted more. So I added Cedarwood and Sandalwood. I loved what that did but then I was flooded with memories of drinking tea with friends in front of a fire on meditation retreats!

Whatever this perfume means for you, the idea is still the same: peace and love, happiness and cherished memories. It's really a wonderful addition to my new Flower & Spirit line of full-strength perfumes and related products. Check it out on Etsy!

Strange Magic Natural Botanical Perfume by Flower and Spirit

Here's one of my newest creations! This all natural botanical perfume made with essential oils, absolutes and flower essences in pure organic jojoba oil makes me SO happy! Unlike several of my other perfumes, this one is not based on anything I've done for Mama Love. Instead it was inspired by my favorite time of year in Chico, CA—when the ground is still moist from the last of the late spring rains and the orange trees are in bloom.

Chico is pleasant but not a terribly exotic place. But in late May and early June—for just a few short weeks—the scent of Neroli wafts through the tree-lined streets and combines with the woodsy earthy smell of the ground beneath your feet. You feel lifted up, held in a sweet embrace, sensually alive, the world full of promise and enchantment. Your heart opens wide and fills with joy, prosperity and abundance. . . transformed by a STRANGE MAGIC

I LOVE this perfume!

Exploring the Signature of Indian Pink for Use as a Flower Essence

Indian Pink photo by Steven Thorsted, CalPhotos
One of the things I like to do on this blog from time to time is to explore the Doctrine of Signatures as it relates to Flower Essence Therapy. Ancient herbalists studied plants looking for clues as to their potential uses. Color, form, where and how they grow-- all these could be used along with experience and intuition to tune in to a plant's inner nature and what it might offer to a human in need of similar qualities.

Since I just wrote about Indian Pink—Silene Californica is the variety I use in my "Calm Focus" flower essence formula—I thought I'd give that flower a closer look. Here are some attributes this flower expresses and what they might signify for the flower as a healing remedy:

• Radiating petals that look like a sun, growing singly on a stem, indicate the ability to impart self-awareness and solar-like strength according to Suzy Chiazzari, the author of Flower Readings. It indicates the kind of self-confidence that emanates from your center and radiates out.

• Red color for me is the symbol of the power of the first chakra: grounded, strong, vitality.

• It has five petals which are bifurcated. Bifurcation is an indication of wanting to go in more than one direction at once. The number 5 is associated with the energy of the pentagon (completeness, stability and the center from which we work) and five-pointed star  (human health and self-protection). It indicates an ability to dispel fear and see your life more clearly and imparts a sense of groundedness and well-being.

• The plant stays low to the ground (grounded) and prefers moist woodlands and stream beds indicating a preference for nurturing or fertile environments.

• It is a favorite of hummingbirds that like to flit from place to place.

The signature of the plant gives a number of clues that it might be helpful to a person needing to work from their center in order to stay vital while attempting to do several things at once.

The Bees Know T-Shirt

I just sold one of my environmental designs on Zazzle. "The Bees Know" came out of my concern for colony collapse disorder and lately it's on my mind again because of the millions of bees killed in South Carolina when they sprayed to stop the Zika virus. I've always liked this T-shirt and it definitely is a favorite of other people as well. I'm pretty sure it's available on organically grown cotton (as well as less expensive choices). And they just added aluminum water bottles which I think is a great idea:

Indian Pink for Calm Focus in an Overstimulating World

Indian Pink Flower Essence © 2015 Sheryl Karas
It is so unusual for me to do a formula that I don't need myself most of the time that sometimes I forget to tell people about them!

For example, I just restocked my supply of Calm Focus and realized that I haven't really given this formula much of an introduction. I tend to organize my life so I have multiple projects that I am working on at once but I only need to focus on one thing at a time. I like focussing on one thing at a time. The way I juggle my work is to focus on one project, jump to another, focus on that, and then "give myself a break" by going to something else. It's what I do best. When I need help "focusing" it's usually because I've gotten stuck, discouraged and need to address the source of my flagging motivation. I created a formula called Focused Attention because it's what I needed to get my work done—more energy and enthusiasm.

But most people with attention problems tell me that more energy isn't what they need at all! Whereas I use multiple tasks to enjoy variety in what is typically a calmly focussed life, they need to calm down so they can focus at all! They tell me that their attention is pulled away from what they are doing way too easily and the last thing they need is MORE excitement and energy. Being addicted to that is actually part of the issue! Indian Pink is the flower essence that I was guided to include for them.

People who need Indian Pink flower essence are actually overly attracted to doing too many things at once. They like it! And they get used to their attention flitting from one thing to the next. In my youth we used to call this the MTV jump cut style of attention. MTV innovated music video that used so many multiple jump cuts that you couldn't—weren't supposed to—focus on a continuous thread. The idea was to keep you moving along with the energetic punk and New Wave music that was so popular at the time. Let me repeat: this was NEW in the 1980s. But since that time, jump cut editing became the norm and the pace of our lives speeded up tremendously at the same time.

People get addicted to multiple things happening at a fast pace from childhood now. And that's fun until things spin out of control and you forget how to return to center. Add in a chaotic, pressure-filled environment, such as we've come to expect in a lot of workplaces these days, and that adds to the problem even more. Multi-tasking is now a job requirement in a lot of places—you better be someone who can handle multiple interruptions and juggling multiple projects at once these days! If you can't find a way to remain centered and focused under these circumstances—if instead you feel emotionally volatile, anxious, irritable, and easily frustrated—you need Indian Pink.  Ultimately, this way of life depletes your energy and can make you tired and sick. By returning to center and operating from that place, you focus on the task at hand. And if you get interrupted, you take a short moment to make a note of where you are so you can go back and find your place, and then focus on the task now at hand. Calm with the ability to stay organized. Calm Focus.

Lady Slippers on the Path, Painting on Society 6

I'm pretty proud to announce that the Chico Breast Care Center recently bought two paintings from me! This acrylic on canvas I call "Lady Slippers on the Path" is one of them. The last time I visited it was hanging right next to the reception desk so everybody who walks in gets to see it! In fact they have a photo on their homepage that shows it just above text that says "For Providers". Here it is: the painting to the left of the desk.

But you can still get a framed or unframed print of it or a print on canvas that looks really nice on Society 6.

And they also sell the image on other items. I particularly like the throw pillows and wall clock.

There are times when being an artist is a lot of fun. This was definitely one of them!

The Spirit of Young Love in a Perfume Bottle!

One of my Facebook friends just asked if any of my new Flower & Spirit perfumes are like my Mama Love Attracting a Partner formula. She loves that one, calls the experience of using it one of being "assailed with cupids in a woodland setting"!

Ha, ha! Well, it does contain flower essences for feeling open to giving and receiving love!

Attracting a Partner formula forms the base for one of my full strength parfums-- Love in Springtime! It has the same flower essences and the same uplifting, bright and rosy essential oils of Rose Geranium, Rosewood, Palmarosa and Ylang Ylang. But I also added a touch of Sandalwood, Patchouli and Vanilla to give it more depth and staying power. There's a lightly scented body oil to match which is my favorite daily after bath moisturizer--Rose Geranium and jojoba is so nice on your skin. Use the body oil under where you apply your perfume and it will help any perfume you use last longer!

My Artwork on Society 6

Looking at the Possibilities -- © 2015 Sheryl Karas
I recently rediscovered Society 6, a great place to buy art! So you can buy my art there now, too! For example this piece, "Looking at the Possibilities." I did this piece as the result of a prompt by an art teacher about a year or two ago. At the time I remember that Paul and I felt like were still standing apart from our current home in Chico, CA (The City of Trees). We were quite divided on whether we should stay or find someplace else to go and I guess that feeling or thought pattern made its way into the painting. Society 6 has it available as a framed or unframed print or print on canvas. And also on a wide variety of products like rugs, wall tapestries, tote bags, throw blankets, and this iPad case.

Healing with Flower Essences (The Bach Flower Remedies)

Poppy by Georgia O'Keefe
When I first started to make flower essence aromatherapy products, I intended to bring the emotional healing I had experienced using my formulas to others—my first formula, to be specific, Mama Love Support for Troubled Times. But healing has multiple levels. I not only wanted a product that was like a healing potion, it was important to me and MY well-being that it be wonderful to use. Medicine for the soul, reviving to the spirit! So I added essential oils to go along with the healing intent AND to make them smell like a delightful perfume! (Now I actually make full-strength flower essence and essential oil perfume, too.)

Oddly, while I used to write about flower essence healing on this blog all the time, more recently I've gotten off track, so let's remedy that. The flower essence-based products I make are ALL made with healing intent. They're even infused with Reiki to make them the most beneficial products I can make. And while I can't say that a specific choice of flower essence(s) will provide healing of any specific physical condition, I know without a doubt, that I have healed myself of many physical complaints by addressing emotional issues alone (frequently using flower essences and Reiki along the way). And the idea of addressing the emotional along with the physical makes a lot of sense from the most scientific perspective—research from the field of psychoneuroimmunology is providing obvious evidence of that!

One of the best ways to heal emotional issues is to take a good look at the chronic thoughts and mental patterns you might be expressing in your life. Your thoughts are so influential on how you feel! But let's take this even further: your beliefs are what become your thoughts. If you believe there is no hope for you, that you just have to soldier on despite there being no actual jail and no warden harboring the key, then you've made your own jail. Your beliefs become a destiny with all the emotional and potential physical consequences involved.

The person most often credited with the discovery of flower essences was Dr. Edward Bach. In modern times, he is certainly the person who was most involved with their investigation and development as a system of medical healing. But he originally could not choose between a religious calling and a medical career, and if you read his books it is very obvious that he considered his Bach Flower Remedies to be both a medically-significant therapy AND a spiritual one. Keep in mind that Bach was an immunologist who was already well-known for creating several vaccines. But he was also a doctor who worked with patients and, through that experience, he became so convinced of the important connection between chronic emotional states and physical well-being that he switched to creating homeopathic remedies using some of his previous research. But Dr. Bach was also led by his spiritual callings. He said that he believed that disease results ultimately from disconnection from our Higher purpose and from the voice of our innermost Divinity.

Every one of Bach's flower remedies was meant to address a particular state of disconnection—from apathy (Wild Rose) to despair (Sweet Chestnut), from deep soul-crushing fatigue (Olive) and loneliness (Heather) to overzealous proselytizing (Vervain) and over-involvement in the affairs of others (Vine). He had 38 different flower remedies that he used, but now there are hundreds of others. I use the entire Bach flower and North American (FES) repertoire in the work that I do.

You can find my Mama Love flower essence aromatherapy products here and also on Etsy.
You can find my Flower & Spirit flower essence-enhanced botanical perfumes on Etsy, too.
