The Step by Step Path in Flower Essence Therapy

I should say "the step by step path" in ANY form of emotional healing and transformation! But since I'm focusing on the Flower Essence Path, whether you are using the traditional Bach Flower Remedies or any other, it is important to realize that taking one remedy may not be enough because it's like opening one door to reveal another. Frequently, the reason for one set of issues is lack of a healthy resolution of an earlier set.

For example, in an earlier post I talked about using a flower essence formula for relieving tension in my jaw and a self-awareness crisis that occurred to help me with that. I realized I was habitually leaning on my hand on the left side and that was why my jaw was out of alignment. But WHY was I in that habitual habit? Partly, it's because I always sit on the same side of the couch but it's also a response to emotional fatigue and overwhelm.

And where did that come from? Unresolved and ongoing disappointments along my chosen economic path. Very frustrating and potentially depressing. So, as is my habit, I have not been allowing myself to feel the despair for fear of triggering a more serious depression.

So now what is happening as I continue with my original jaw tension issue formula? More ability to laugh—Trevor Noah and Stephen Colbert seem much more funny now. But also, much more awareness of the grief that's unresolved underneath.

Ironically, I made a flower essence for other people yesterday for grief as a result of the loss of a loved one. But today I thought it could be used for other kinds of loss and mixed some up for myself.

Flower Essences for Grief, Loss and Broken-Heartedness

I just added a made-on-demand flower essence formula for grief and broken-heartedness to my Mama Love shops! I already had one I thought was best for that -- Support for Troubled Times (soothing comfort for when life feels so hard you don't know how to pick up the pieces and carry on) -- but there are other times when you know you'll be carried but are heartbroken nonetheless.

This new formula contains Bleeding Heart, Star of Bethlehem and Walnut. Bleeding Heart is for healing a broken heart and helps soothe the longing for connection this kind of loss entails. Star of Bethlehem is one of the classic Bach remedies used in times of shock, trauma or grief. Walnut is for dealing with a traumatic transition to help with letting go of how things used to be.

Right now this formula is offered primarily as a conventional flower essence dropper bottle or spray without essential oils. You can, however, ask for a lightly scented flower essence aromatherapy spray or oil on request through the listing on my Etsy site only.

Relaxing Flower Tea Recipe

Today's drink, currently in my hands, is gentle tasting, very relaxing and so good for you! It has a lovely sweet floral aroma. It doesn't taste sweet and yet I have no desire to add any sweetener to it and I'm not adding any dairy or dairy substitute. I like it just like this. Although I will add this word of warning: this is SO relaxing I probably should have waited until evening!

Super easy to make!

Relaxing Flower Tea
Per Large Mug
Put ingredients in a tea strainer or tea ball. Add hot water and let steep 3 minutes.

All ingredients can be found in my Etsy shop.

Making Your Own Coffee Substitutes -- DIY Herbal Coffee-like Drinks

I have a hard time with caffeine! A little bit -- I'm talking about 2-3 sips! -- of coffee makes me feel more grounded. That's nice. A whole cup or sometimes just a half cup makes me feel spaced out, especially if I use any sweetener. And I just can't function like that—I literally want to lie down and take a nap or, more to the point, get it out of my system as fast as possible by drinking lots of water. NOT the normal reaction, right?

So awhile ago I started making herbal blends to take the place of my full-bodied morning drink. After a fair bit of experimentation I discovered that Roasted Chicory and Dandelion Root are two ingredients that most mimic that earthy-bitter with a touch of sweet taste we like in coffee. Carob adds something I really like and a little more sweetness. Experimenting with Orange Peel and Cinnamon Chips was a nice experience. And -- for those who don't worry about gluten grains -- Caramel Malt (malted barley used in beer making) makes a Chicory and Dandelion blend an awesome treat!

Here are my favorite recipes from my personal experimentation. Place the ingredients in a tea ball or strainer. Add hot water and steep about 3 minutes (longer if you like your coffee-substitute strong). You can find most of the ingredients (except extracts) in my MamaLoveOrganics shop on Etsy.

Orange Spice Dandelion
Per Serving (large mug) use:

1/2 tsp Roasted Chicory Root
1/2 tsp Roasted Dandelion Root
1/4 tsp Orange Peel
1/4 tsp Cinnamon Chips

Steep 3 minutes, sweeten and add 1/2 and 1/2 if desired
(Using honey brings out the orange taste more.)

Vanilla Almond Dandelion
Per serving (large mug) use:

1/2 tsp Roasted Chicory Root
1/2 tsp Roasted Dandelion Root
1/2 tsp. Carob
2-3 drops Almond extract
4-5 drops Vanilla extract

Steep 3 minutes, sweeten and add 1/2 and 1/2 if desired.

Favorite Herbal Coffee Blend
Per serving (large mug) use:

1/2 tsp Roasted Chicory Root
1/2 tsp. Caramel Malt
1/4 tsp. Roasted Dandelion Root
1/4 tsp. Carob

Steep 3 minutes, sweeten and add 1/2 and 1/2 if desired. Naturally sweet --you might not need sweetener!

Flower Essences with Aromatherapy for Spiritual Bliss and Wellbeing

Quite a long time ago now I had a spiritual opening that changed my life forever. At this point, I say "Yay!" But back then . . . well, having your world view turned upside down isn't for sissies

There's information in the above link for people dealing with issues of spiritual emergence or spiritual emergency, but more often beginners on the trail want advice on how to access their spiritual guidance, how to work with it, and how to feel more grounded and safe.

I have lots of great information in the two links above but I have always found flower essences and flower essences combined with aromatherapy to be of service to me and I have many formulas on my list that can be helpful. If you're having extremely challenging experiences with spiritual awakening and guidance, first get help! Read my articles linked above and follow the advice there. My "Releasing Worry and Fear" or "Support for Troubled Times" might be of service but they can't do the work alone. You need to get grounded and find additional forms of support.

"Trusting Inner Guidance" is another one I highly recommend for people wanting to feel safer working with their inner guidance. It contains Angelica, Star Tulip, Lotus, and Purple Monkeyflower flower essences for increased awareness of spiritual sources of support, expanded insight and meditative focus, along with emotional balance, calm and clarity around spiritual / psychic phenomena. You can buy it as a flower essence dosage strength dropper bottle, or as an oil or scented spray for topical use only with Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Angelica, and Clary Sage essential oils added for enhanced meditative relaxation, spiritual awareness and expansive vision balanced with groundedness and a feeling of safety. I also have unscented flower essence sprays for people who like to use flower essences in the aura or find the sprays more convenient without additional scent.

"Clearing Negativity" is also one I find helpful because it is so important to get into as clear a space as possible when accessing your guidance. It's available in a dropper bottle, as an unscented flower essence spray or scented oil (great as an anointing oil) but I typically use the scented spray because it's like a smokeless smudge. I spray it around my body (in the aura if you prefer) with the same intention as I would use in any tradition that prepares for spiritual practice with a cleansing ritual. I use ingredients from Christian, Buddhist and Native American traditions to make it: Lotus, Sage, Angelica flower essences and Sandalwood, Frankincense, Myrrh essential oils.

Other spiritually oriented formulas you may wish to check out are Manifesting Life Purpose (for finding your purpose and ways to integrate it with your daily work),  Inner Strength and Protection (for those who feel overly empathic or sensitive), and Renewed Faith and Optimism (for those who feel depressed or discouraged on the spiritual path).

To be honest, ALL my Mama Love products are spiritual in orientation. They are all spiritually guided and infused with Reiki to be the most beneficial products I can make. But if you are specifically interested in spiritual practice, these are the ones I think of most.

I have a special in my Etsy shop right now: you can get five of my scented 1 oz flower essence oils or sprays in a boxed set for 30% off in my Etsy shop. Or choose five UNSCENTED 1 oz dropper bottles or unscented sprays in a boxed set for the same discount.

Are You Suffering From Election Stress Disorder?

It's a thing. The American Psychological Association says that more than 50% of Americans say the election is causing them severe stress. And Mama Love has noted your pain: my most popular products right now are Releasing Worry and Fear and Soothing the Angry Heart with Restful Sleep and Support for Troubled Times close behind. And people are buying the large sizes! (Which is more economical so you can feel free to use it liberally! I've been using these as my daily after-bath oil instead of body lotion.) An interesting choice some people have been making: Open-Hearted Loving! My customers inspire me sometimes so I gave it a try. Yeah, it's appropriate! I've been carrying tension in my chest this election and Open-Hearted Loving is great for the Heart chakra. I found it quite relaxing. And, yes, I always get asked this question: you CAN use more than one at the same time! (I certainly do.)

I have an ELECTION SPECIAL in my Etsy shop right now: my three top-sellers as a set for 30% off.

The Upside of a Flower Essence Self-Awareness Crisis

Some people (on occasion, not often) find that the psychological condition they are treating with flower essences temporarily intensifies just before transformation occurs. This is called a self-awareness crisis and it is caused by bringing unconscious emotions and attitudes to sharper awareness. It is also something I avoid like the plague! Who wants to take something to heal a problem and have it get worse? It's counter-intuitive. . . but sometimes it's exactly what needs to happen!

Case in point: my jaw is out of alignment and causing me migraine headaches, problems with chewing, TMJ symptoms. I've tried a lot of approaches such as daily Reiki, Chinese medicine, massage, magnesium (that DID help but has side effects at the high enough dose). I've also been examining emotional issues I know are involved (anger and resentment about not getting hired at full-time positions I am wildly qualified for, not getting into MFA programs, the elections, etc.). I finally decided to use a flower essence that was guided to me: Larch, Rock Water and Zinnia.

Larch is for having a more positive outlook on the future and more confident self-expression. Rock Water is for not being so hard on myself and for relaxing rigidities. Zinnia is for lightening up, cultivating amusement about the absurdities of life, and having more positive energy for life in general and for what I want to try next.

Sounds good except the first thing that happened was an intensification of the opposite feelings! And my jaw pain got really bad. Oh damn! Who wants that? But then something surprising happened. I've been working on this problem with very little sustainable progress for some time and was feeling angry, sad, overwhelmed and discouraged. I flopped on the couch on my customary left side, leaned into the armrest that my elbow was resting on and rested my head in my left hand -- OWWWW! My jaw hurt like hell!

And that's when I realized that this posture was my customary unconscious behavior whenever I was feeling this bad! This was a repetitive motion injury of sorts and all I had to do was stop that behavior and perhaps counteract the damage by pushing my jaw the other way. Easier said than done -- I had NO idea how often I had fallen into that habit, but I'm actively aware of it now, making changes and my jaw already is feeling better. Much better. And I don't think I would have gotten a handle on it if the flower essences hadn't intensified the problem temporarily enough for me to notice it more obviously.

So don't be afraid of a self-awareness crisis when using flower essences -- work with it! Regular use of complementary practices such as meditation, counseling, journal-keeping or other forms of self-expression can ease the process or prevent a healing crisis from occurring in the first place. If the awareness crisis becomes unusually intense (beyond a healthy level of discomfort), reduce the frequency of the dosage or change the flower essence selection.

UPDATE (October 31st): I've continued taking this formula, the initial self-awareness crisis has passed, and my sense of humor has wonderfully returned! Yay! It's been gone for awhile. And my jaw is back in alignment and feeling MUCH better. Just a bit of residual tension left so I'm still using my essence formula for awhile longer.
